What Good Have I Done Today - 921 Words

Franklin provided his reader with exact detailed examples to help in ones journey to become a self-made, better man. He includes his daily, jam-packed schedule and guidelines noting that every evening each man should ask himself: â€Å"what good have I done today?† (Franklin 87). He also advocates rising and going to bed early. Throughout his narrative, Equiano shares tidbits of religious faith with the reader, encouraging the reader to find salvation in Christianity; he mentions how good the lord had been to him, as he treated him â€Å"better (to me) than I deserved†(Equiano 196). In this manner, Franklin differs from Equiano; Franklin practices his own form of reason rather than a specific religion. He rules are very straightforward; ideals such as temperance, frugality, and justice cover his list. While, he does note that one should â€Å"Imitate Jesus and Socrates† (Franklin 84), he says so in an almost sarcastic manner, just to include some sort of religiousness on the list. Equiano primarily chooses faith. He was a very strong believer in god and chose to be baptized during his travels. Although Equiano did have a form of reason to his actions, his main focus was on doing what was right in the eyes of god. While Franklin’s writings teach us the ways of a self-made man, Equiano teaches us about faith and god, and how god was able to help him become the great man that he was with encouraging words â€Å"no help in them, nor by the law†¦Ã¢â‚¬â„¢Salvation is by Christ alone!’† (Equiano 207).Show MoreRelatedThe Mirror: Brand Na mes in Todays Society Essay1740 Words   |  7 PagesCAROLINE.
